Pai is located on an elevated plain at an altitude of 560 meters. Its surrounded by mountains and has been isolated for a long time. After the construction of the road H1095 leading from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son, travellers and tourists found their way into the little village, along with modern civilization.
The population mostly consists of Shan, also called Thai Yai. and speak their own dialect. Many Muslims reside in Pai and the mosque is in the center of the village. Many Karen, Lisu and Lahu can be seen in the village, they either do their shopping, visit the doctor or sell their handicrafts.
Even though more than 150 guest houses and restaurants have opened, Pai has kept its mountain village character. It is the place to bring your hammock along.... Many hippies have found their way to Pai and during high season from January to March, rave parties and jungle parties take place. Also Thai tourists have discovered the little village to enjoy the cold winter nights on weekends. Since a major Thai movie has been filmed here you can see many starlets in fancy clothes on the weekends. Every night during the season Pai Walking Street is held. The surroundings of Pai are worth some excursions. There are temples, hot springs, river rafting and great viewpoints along the mountainous roads. Pai is an ideal destination if you want to visit the hill tribes and the ideal take off for trekking tours. Most of the guest houses have their own guide - otherwise book with one of the travel agents in the village.
