The urbanization rate in Thailand is very low. Despite the fact that the percentage of people living in cities increases continuously, the migration of Thais cannot be considered a rural exodus.

In 1960 about 87,5 % of the population lived in rural areas, and in 1985 the rate was 82,5 %.  At the present time about 70 % of the population live in rural areas.

The capital Bangkok occupies a special place. Since 1970 the population increased from 2.4 million to 10 - 14 million (depending on the source). About a fifth of Thailand's total population lives in greater Bangkok.
