By Bus: To Bangkok (367 km), second class aircon bus leaves at 6.30 am, 9 am and 12.30 pm for 214 Baht, a non-stop aircon bus leaves daily seven times per day, from 10.30 am to 7 pm for 290 Baht, traveling time 5 to 5 ½ hours. It is quite a hassle to take a bus to the south, so the train in the afternoon to Chumphon is the better option.
By Train to Bangkok: It is most convenient to go overnight with an aircon sleeper in Express Train 86 at 10.29 pm, which arrives in Bangkok at 6.05 am, fares are from 585/1007 Baht (second/first class). Advance purchase of the ticket is highly recommended. During the day the Special Express Train 40 at 2.11 pm is a good option, though it arrives in Bangkok after dark at 7.45 pm.
By Train to the South: If you intend to continue your journey south by public transport we highly recommend taking the Slow Train in the afternoon at 15.08 hours to Chumphon. It is very cheap, you may get in contact with some local people, and you arrive in time to reach your guesthouse before dark. Then you can enjoy a special meal out in the food market along Kromluang Chumphon Road. The Rapid 171 arrives in Chumphon just in time to take a songthaew to the harbour for the night boat to Koh Tao. We do not recommend to rush through Chumphon, though. For the direct trip to Surat Thani the Sprinter at 13 hours is a good choice. All other trains leave in the night and are only useful if you intend to take one to its final destination where it arrives conveniently in the morning.
