The Vegetarian Festival in Khao Lak

The Vegetarian Festival is celebrated in October every year. The origin of this spectacular event is in Takua Pa, the district capital of Phang Nga Province.
In Khao Lak the Vegetarian Festival starts at three locations: the Chinese Temple in Khuk Khak, the Chinese Shrine in Bang Niang and the Kuan Im Shrine of Happy Lagoon in Nang Thong.
The complete population of Khao Lak is involved in this 10 day festival, whether they are Thai Buddhists or Chinese Buddhists. Dressed in white shirts and trousers they all attend ceremonies at the Chinese Temples or Shrines and walk through the streets with various spears pierced through their cheeks.
One of the special attractions is the walking over the burning char coals, the fire walk.

Vegetarian Festival (Khuk Khak) (พิธีลุ้ยไฟ วัดคึกคัก) (KhaoLak)

The Vegetarian Festival or Kin Jay is a time of penance and purification of both body and mind.
The Khuk Khak Vegetarian Festival is similar to the well known Vegetarian Festival in Phuket and Trang, but on a village level.

The Vegetarian Festival is held from the first through to the ninth night of the ninth Chinese lunar month; that is, in September or October. In 2011 these days are from September 25 until October 7. The Vegetarian Festival has its origins in China, but in Thailand it was performed for the first time in Talad Takua Pa, the Old Town of Takua Pa, just 20 km away from Khuk Khak.

Not only in Khuk Khak but also in the shrines of villages around the believers in Chinese Buddhism celebrate the Vegetarian Festival clad in white garments.
Highly interesting is the festival in the Chinese shrines of Ban Bang Niang and Ban Bang La On (Nang Thong Beach) where highly respected mediums make their appearance.
