Soups (tom) Tom yam: A sour and spicy soup, eaten preferably with kung (prawns) or pla (fish). The special flavour comes from lemon grass, ginger and chillies. | |
Tom kha gai: Similar to tom yam, but with chicken and much less spicy – It is prepared with almost the same ingredients. Nam pla (salty fish sauce), lime juice and a lot of coconut milk is added to the soup. Then cooked together with pieces of chicken. | |
Gang chood pak: A kind of vegetable soup that receives its special aroma from several Thai vegetables and a lot of fresh coriander. Sometimes thin glass noodles are added.

Thai salads (yam) get their special flavor from the sauce. Lemon grass, lime juice, chopped onions, garlic and coriander are mixed with a little nam pla (Fish Sauce) and nam prik (Chili Sauce) and are poured over grilled meat, shrimps or vegetables. The most famous salad is Som Tham, made from green papaya, Yum mamuang is salad made from green mangoes. A specialty in the South is Yam Makua, made from grilled eggplants with fried grated onions and coconut milk. A real Must Taste! | |
