In the swampy coastal areas of Phang Nga Bay and along the Andaman Sea thrive mangroves, which are resistant against the salt water. Over 30 species continuously create more land area, because mud, branches and fallen leaves trapped in their net-like roots form the base for a substance which leads to further creation of soil finally becoming the foundation for many plants. The extensive mangrove forests are crisscrossed by wide and narrow rivers and natural canals (khlongs) that are navigable by longtailboat and sea canoe. 
Mangroves can be seen in Phang Nga Province in various ways (from south to north): 
-- sea canoeing in Phang Nga Bay
-- mangrove nature trail near the pier
-- board walk in Wat Khaojaroentham
-- by longtail boat from Tha Din Daeng
-- kayaking in the mangroves of Nam Khem
-- by boat through Little Amazon near Takua Pa
-- by longtail boat around Thung Nang Dam Island

Wat Khaojaroentham (Takua Thung) (วัดเก่าเจริญธรรม (ตะกั่วทุ่ง)) (PhangNga)
The main attraction of Wat Khaojaroentham is a huge banyan tree that is supposed to be over 100 years old. It spreads in a mangrove forest with hundreds of stems. A walkway leads through the mangrove forest and the banyan tree. This fairytale scenery gives a fantastic impression of tropical jungle.
The temple compound houses also a giant statue of a monk. Offerings are presented to the smaller copy in front.
Wat Khaojaroentham is situated near Takua Thung only 500 m from the highway.
