Beaches on Koh Tao
Along the two long sandy beaches on the west coast, Sai Ri Beach and Mae Hat Beach,There are a large array of bungalow resorts set close to one another under the coconut palms.
The deep bays in the south are framed by round boulders and seem very romantic at high tide, yet they are less inviting during low tide as the beaches are covered with dead corals then.
The east and northeast of the island are rough and difficult to access, only at low tide do small sandy beaches appear between the rocks.

Bungalows More than 100 bungalow resorts have been built on the island, on popular beaches as well as on the small bays and in the interior of the island. Mae Hat and Sai Ri Beach feature mainly clean and well-kept resorts with pretty and slightly expensive bungalows with attached bathroom and fan for about 400 Baht per night. More and more resorts also offer comfortable bungalows with air con which cost twice as much. Even new luxury resorts with rooms for several thousand Baht have been developed recently. All other beaches still offer - even during high season - simple huts made of bamboo mats, wood or plywood for less than 200 Baht per night. Apart from that, the price level is higher compared to neighboring islands. In recent years, most bungalow owners operating on the main beaches increased their prices. During dry season many resorts suffer from a shortage of water and it has to be brought from the mainland and is expensive. Nearly all resorts have their own restaurant. You cannot expect any luxury restaurants but generally the food is quite good. One garbage truck and three incinerating plants are responsible for the environmentally friendly waste disposal. Nevertheless, just with a superficial look it is obvious that the island cannot cope with the garbage problem. Although plastic bottles are recycled on the mainland, many of them end up in the countryside. Drinking water in glass bottles is sold on the island and it is said that the quality is better than the locally produced drinking water. All beaches have electricity supply. Especially during the high season it is advisable to make a reservation ahead for accommodation as many bungalow resorts are only available for divers or dive students. | |
