The city Hua Hin with more than 50,000 inhabitants is only 188 km from Bangkok, situated on the southern train route. When the railway track was first completed, the director of the railway Prince Purachatra, a son of the king who ruled at that time, gave orders to construct the Railway Hotel in 1921. Directly on the beach a modern resort with tennis court and the first golf course in the country was built according to European models. The high society arrived here during the hot season to enjoy the cool sea breeze.

The sandy beach is separated from the harbor by a rocky promontory, where a high rise hotel building has been constructed that now belongs to the Hilton group.
Fishermen come back to the harbor to unload their catch in the mornings between 7 and 8 am and in the evenings, when the fish is sold immediately.
In the small side lanes around the harbor peoples lives have always been influenced by fishing.

Wer heute palmenumsäumte, einsame Strände erwartet, sollte lieber weiter Richtung Süden fahren, auch ein Nachtleben à la Pattaya wird hier noch nicht geboten, ebenso wenig exotische Tempel und andere traditionelle Sehenswürdigkeiten. Der älteste Badeort Thailands hat sich zu einem Ort des (nicht nur Wochenend-) Massentourismus entwickelt, den auch in der Nebensaison Billigtouristen überschwemmen. Deutsche Individualreisende werden nur noch selten gesichtet. Wer in dieser relativ teuren Stadt Urlaub macht, findet sowohl gute Seafood-Restaurants als auch am westlichen Geschmack orientierte Restaurants, viele laute Bars und Biergärten vor. Von November bis April bewegt man sich vorwiegend unter skandinavischen Paaren. Da die neue Autobahn weiträumig um Hua Hin herumführt, ist der lokale Verkehr auf der Hauptstraße durchaus erträglich. 2 km südlich der Stadt hat sich an einem schöneren Strandabschnitt eine kleine Travellerenklave gebildet. Noch weiter südlich liegen die Luxushotels, die nur über Reiseveranstalter gebucht werden.

Der 6 km lange, von Felsen durchsetzte, mit Liegen und Sonnenschirmen bestückte Sandstrand ist bis zu 100 m breit. Erst ab dem Sofitel Hotel Richtung Süden eignet er sich zum Baden. Er wird einmal pro Woche gereinigt und dafür stellenweise abgesperrt. Ein tropisches Flair verbreiten die auf dem Strand eingepflanzten Palmenhaine. Zu manchen Zeiten des Jahres verleiden Quallen das Badevergnügen. In der Thai-Saison von Juni bis Oktober kann man noch thailändisches Strandleben beobachten. Dazu gehört auch ein Ausritt auf einem der 30 Ponys am Strand entlang (200 Baht/halbe Stunde). Entsprechend verschmutzt sieht der Strand aus, eine echte Gesundheitsgefährdung für die vielen Kinder. Nach Süden wird der Strand von einer Landzunge begrenzt, auf der sich mehrere buddhistische Tempel an die Spitzen felsiger, kleiner Hügel schmiegen.

Nach Norden ist der Strand vom Hafen durch eine felsige Landzunge getrennt, auf der ein Hochhaushotel hochgezogen wurde, das jetzt zu Hilton gehört. Morgens von 7–8 Uhr und abends kommen die Fischer mit ihren Booten in den Hafen zurück, um den Fang zu entladen, der sofort verkauft wird. In den schmalen Gassen um den Hafen prägt noch immer der Fischfang das Leben der Menschen.

Die Ananas-Firma Dole, Tel 032-571177, bietet Mo–Sa Führungen von 90 Min. durch die Produktionsanlagen und umliegende Ananasplantagen für 250 Baht. Zu erreichen mit einem Songthaew vom Nordrand des Marktes (13 km). Die Früchte reifen zwischen April und Juli auf den Feldern.

Khao Hin Lek Fai is a small park 2 km west of the city. You can enjoy a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings. Dozens of high rise buildings catch your eye, among them many half-finished and ruined buildings, the unfortunate result of 'false speculation'.

Impressive temples with huge Buddha statues are under construction in the north-western part of the city, just before the elephant camp and opposite a Chinese cemetery.

Wat Huay Mongkol *** (วัดห้วยมงคล ) (HuaHin)

Wat Huay Mongkol is a very busy temple and worshipers come from far away to pay respects to the huge statue of Luang Phor Tuad. Not only is the temple regarded as a holy place, it has also become a recreational area for visitors. It is supposedly the largest statue of its kind and represents Somdet Phako, formerly called Poo, whose birth date is assumed to have been around A.D.1582 or 1588 (B.E. 2125 or 2131).

Luang Poh Tuad is an important Buddha for the people of the south; it is linked to the supernatural power of turning salt water into fresh when Buddha soaked his legs in the sea. His Majesty the King has visited the temple many times and the Royal initial of Her Majesty the Queen is installed in the front of the statue.

Wat Huay Mongkol is located west of Hua Hin near the mountains and the Burma border.
