Travelling by Train All trains from Surat Thani take about 3 hours, from further afield all fast trains take between 6 and 8 hours. So most passengers arrive in the evening or in the night. Even if you arrive after 10 p.m. this is not a problem, because in Chumphon life ends very late and you will always find a motorcycle taxi taking you to your favoured hotel or guest house which will welcome you even at late hours. If you arrive in the guest house after hours, don't worry: there will be a note at the door telling you which room is empty. Just make yourself comfortable and keep the check-in for the morning.

Travelling by Bus and Minivan Most long distance busses nowadays stop at the new bus terminal at the highway H41 which is 11 km to the west of Chumphon. It is very inconvenient to have to change there into a songthaeo heading for the city, for a fairly high fare. So most travellers now use the minivan services provided by private companies. Minivans leave in the morning and around noon from every major tourist destination and end right in the city where you find your guest house just across from the minivan stop or not far around the corner.
Our table gives the departure times from Chumphon. The time from your point of departure will be very similar -- you see signboards at every tour counter. | |
