The East coast is by far not as developed as the West Coast with its wonderful beaches. The beaches on the east coast are swampy and shallow, still have mangroves and not ideal for bathing.
The only exception is in Ban Sa Kha Ou, where you can find a small resort in a secluded bay.
When you explore the east coast coming from Saladan, you pass the car ferry pier and after about 2 kilometers you can attend a show at the Monkey School. To your left you see the Andaman Sea and to your right rubber tree plantations and small farmhouses. Rubber trees do still play an important part in Lanta´s economy. After another couple of kilometers you pass the Old Lanta Restaurant, which also has a fishing lake. A bit further south you can take a tour through the mangroves.
Mangrove Forest Park on the East Coast is a small conservatory for mangroves. Friendly staff take you through the mangrove forest by boat and tell you all about this complicated and very fragile Eco system.
Lanta Monkey School shows well trained monkeys and brings them closer to the tourists. Monkeys even nowadays are still important to clean Palm Trees and harvest coconuts.
