Chonnabot (KhonKaenProvince)
The traditional weaving technique Mudmee (also Mat Mie) is particularly used by the women in Chonnabot, about 60 km southwest of the city of Khon Kaen.
After the harvest season (from December onwards) you can observe the technique how women and children spin and weave silk and cotton.
Before the weaving process of mudmee starts the long bunches of threads are tied with plastic strings in different sections. After that, the men die them in flashy colours. As the tied parts do not take the colour, the irregular pattern is created after the weaving. The traditional base colour for cotton fabrics is indigo blue. It is possible to repeat the tying and dyeing, but normally the white patches are coloured with a brush afterwards.
