The Silk Village Chonnabot

Mudmee of Chonnabot

The traditional weaving technique Mudmee (also Mat Mie) is particularly used by the women in Chonnabot, about 60 km southwest of the city of Khon Kaen.
After the harvest season (from December onwards) you can watch the technique how women and children spin and weave silk and cotton.
Before the weaving process of mudmee starts the long bunches of threads are tied with plastic strings in different sections. After that, the men die them in flashy colours. As the tied parts do not take the colour, the irregular pattern is created after the weaving. The traditional base colour for cotton fabrics is indigo blue. It is possible to repeat the tying and dyeing, but normally the white patches are coloured with a brush afterwards.
Chonnabot has a 'Thai Silk Exhibition Hall' (Sala Mai Thai) that displays information about the town and its livelihood.
It is situated about 1 kilometer west of Chonnabot in the Khon Kaen Industrial and Community Education College. Admission is free, although donations are welcome.
Some of the shops in the town have silk looms. Demos of the silk weavers' craft can be organized with some prior notification.
To reach Chonnabot go on H2 for 46 km until Ban Phai (KM 399) to the south, then about 16 kilometres further to the west on H229, the road to Chaiyaphum.
The weaving mills located in the center of the village are easily found due to the monotonous sound of the looms. Some small shops at the main road sell cotton and silk fabrics.
Of course the local silk products can be purchased from a variety of outlets in Chonnabot. Buying directly from the source, prices are normally quite good (although they may be lower in major cities where outlets purchase in bulk and pass savings on to customers).
Do not expect to barter successfully if you can't speak Thai -- hardly any locals here speak some English!
