An impressive tour for nature lovers who like to discover places on their own, altogether 172 km, goes on H2366 and H2055 via Nong Bua Deng (H2159, 44 km) and Kaset Sombun (H2037, 35 km) to Chulaphorn. The parklike area at the dam is very well tended. There are beautiful walking trails where the nature lies still untouched and you can see many different kinds of water birds. Accommodation at a camping site (100 baht/tent) or in bungalows (400–3000 baht), a good restaurant is available.
An even more amazing experience awaits when you continue the journey (25 km) to Tung Ka Mang to the Phu Kieo Wildlife Sanctuary (entrance 200 baht, worthwhile!). We recommend to stay at least for 3 days here to explore the unique flora and fauna. The camp site costs 50 baht or accommodation in so-called 'Lodges'. You can also access this remote region from Khon San along H12, about 20 km west of Chum Phae. Then, a very good road for another 40 km through bizarre mountain landscape.
