The large Ubolratana Dam is a popular destination for a day out for locals who come for a picnic at the shores of the dam and enjoy the cool breeze. The 800 m long and 32 m high retaining wall can dam up to 2550 mio. m³ water at an area of 40 000 ha. From Khon Kaen go to the north and at KM 27 turn to the west. After another 24 km you reach the dam. At the end of the road a self-service restaurant with view to the dam and the lake is situated. Next to the dam is a golf course and some chalets.
To enjoy a beautiful view over Phu Phan Kham National Park and the lake you can go up to the nearby temple Wat Phra Bhat which is situated at the top of Phu Phan Kham mountain. The best time is during the morning. The temple can be reached by road or walk your way up on a strenuous staircase at the left before the entrance to the park where a marble buddha image stands.
