Modern Painting in Thailand

Thailand is well known for its exotic arts in which painting plays an important role. Tourists see paintings mainly in temples that show scenes from the life of Buddha or other religious personalities and the lifestyle of people during those times. These paintings are highly imaginative and are performed in an idealistic realism. Other paintings are for decorative and ornamental purposes only.
Thousands of painters in Thailand have learned to copy paintings of all types and styles. They have perfected their skills such that they can produce near duplicates in a few days. This type of painting is a well paid handicraft but of course no art. 
Only few painters have found their own unique style of painting which makes them true artists.
Most artists started their careers as copy painters. It takes many years to develop a personal style in order to become an artist. As in other countries only few Thai artists can live from selling their works.
The island of Phuket has attracted a number of Thai artists who can sell their works here in galleries more easily to make a living.
One of them is Veerachan Usahanun who for over ten years produces works of fantasy and imagination, mainly about the religious character Ganesha, who is adored in Thailand as Phra Pikaneth.
Other artists resorted to a more abstract style, among them Prasert Kongwutthiwet.
