The Surin Islands are one of the best dive sites in Thailand. The small group of islands are a national park since 1981. No hotels or resorts are on the islands, only a small National Park lodge and a restaurant. Koh Surin Nua and Koh Surin Tai are about 75 km west of the mainland in the Andaman Sea. They are covered with pristine jungle vegetation. The coastline consists of various bays and coves some of which are bordered by beautiful white sandy beaches. The Surin Islands attracts a growing number of day-trippers to the islands who engage in snorkeling and swimming. Some boats come solely for diving too. On weekends and holidays especially Thais come to Surin for snorkeling. Only a handful beaches can be reached also by walking through the island on adventurous jungle trails. |

The National Park Restaurant has become famous for its excellent food, best ordered by a guide for his tour group. A small kiosk sells some articles for daily life. The National Park staff do not speak or understand English very good. Koh Surin is a diving destination for diving boats from Khao Lak or Phuket, so in the high season you can see quite a few boats and divers at the various diving spots. The average sea depth is between 10 and 20 metres. | |
A few hundred sea gypsies, the Chao Le, live on the Surin Islands. They live from catching fish and providing longtail boat service around the islands and to the many beaches.
